Economico for Codex

Codex is OpenAI's coding agent for the terminal, IDE and ChatGPT desktop app. Add Economico's MCP server, sign in once, and Codex keeps your books while you build.

What Codex is

Codex is OpenAI's coding agent. The open-source Codex CLI runs in your terminal, reads and writes files and runs shell commands; the same configuration serves the IDE extension and the ChatGPT desktop app. It connects to remote MCP servers with OAuth, and it can run the @economico/cli package like any other command.

Connect Economico over MCP (recommended)

Add the server, then sign in. The login opens the browser: use your email or Google, create your company or pick an existing one, and approve what Codex may do.

Add the MCP server & sign in
codex mcp add economico --url https://economi.co/mcp
codex mcp login economico

Or add it to ~/.codex/config.toml yourself:

config.toml
[mcp_servers.economico]
url = "https://economi.co/mcp"

Connect Economico through the CLI

Install the CLI (Node 24 or newer) and log in. The browser opens once; tokens are stored and refresh automatically:

Install & log in
npm install -g @economico/cli
economico login

To try it without installing:

Without installing (npx)
npx -y @economico/cli@latest login

Or hand Codex the setup guide and let it choose:

Set up Economico per https://economi.co/skill.md

What to ask once connected

Ask in plain language. Codex finds the right commands, posts balanced entries and reads the result back. Copy one to try:

Record what a customer owes
Record the $4,000 March consulting amount due from Acme under our agreement. Show the activity statement and what Acme owes.
Book an expense you already paid
Find the $90 Vercel receipt in my email and record it as a hosting expense, paid from our operating account. Show the entry.
Check recorded credits
Show the AWS and OpenAI credits we have recorded: how much is left and when each expires.
Month summary
Summarize this month's recorded invoices, payments received, open balances and recognized revenue. Show the source entries.
Burn and runway
Using our recorded cash and spending history, what is our runway estimate? State the assumptions and show the source reports.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

MCP or the CLI?

Either. Both reach the same commands, reports and books. MCP keeps the tools inside Codex's session; the CLI suits scripts and shells without an MCP configuration.

What do I need installed?

Nothing extra for MCP. The CLI needs Node 24 or newer and runs on Linux, macOS and Windows.

Can Codex run unattended in CI?

Signing in needs a person once: economico login --no-browser prints the sign-in link for you to open. For a worker with nobody present, register a headless agent: it authenticates with its own signing key, is bound to one business, and can run only commands that need no human approval. See skill.md.
